A Short History of the – Goodrich Martians

Goodrich is the only school in the United States with a “Martian” as its mascot. The name comes from Mars, the Roman god associated with both war and agriculture. That origin connects perfectly to the values we now call: Martian STRONG.
Before the 1930s, Goodrich teams were known as the Gladiators. During that era, Goodrich was a farming community and the district carried the official title “Goodrich Rural Agricultural Schools.” When the school adopted the Martians name in the 1930s, it fit perfectly: Mars symbolized strength and victory as a warrior, while also representing springtime, growth, and agriculture—reflecting the community’s roots.
Today, while “Rural Agricultural” is no longer part of the district name, Goodrich still maintains many small farms, and the Martians tradition continues. The mascot stands for a legacy of strength, growth, and determination—values that Goodrich students carry with pride on the playing field, in performances, and in the classroom.
